#TodayILearned that Reuben and Richard were once seen as country, bumpkin-ish names and they were shortened to, respectively, ‘Rube’ and ‘Hick’

The podcast was very interesting on the British roots of the modern Olympics…..I was also pleased to hear a reference to the lack of funding of British basketball compared to “the sitting down sports” of sailing, horse-riding, rowing and cycling.

“Yet let us all together to our troops, And give them leave to fly that will not stay; And call them pillars that will stand to us; And, if we thrive, promise them such rewards As victors wear at the Olympian games:”

#TodayILearned that the first known reference to the Olympics, in English, is in Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part 3

As I’ve said before it’s always nice to hear a West Country accent on the telly that’s not Phil Harding or Ian Holloway

Although as I’ve also said before, when I’m in Bristol I often instinctively feel people are taking the mickey of the way I talk

My lovers.

#TodayILearned that Greek Fire was a flame-throwing sort of weapon

I saw it in a book (maybe Donna Tartt?) and thought it was just a passion for ancient Greece
